Berkshire

Berkshire is in the south of England with Wiltshire forming the border to the west, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire to the north and Hampshire and Surrey to the south and borders Greater London to the east. Over the years towns and villages along the boundaries have swapped between counties as the boundary line has changed and our ancestors would often have been affected by this.

The River Thames runs through the county, largely forming the northern boundary. Sitting alongside the Thames is the town of Windsor and Windsor Castle which gave rise to Berkshire becoming the Royal County of Berkshire. Next to Windsor is Eton famous for the public school Eton College.

Berkshire is also the home of three major horse racing venues Ascot, Windsor and Newbury.

This is where our maternal ancestors of PAYNE and Clements lived.
