Buckinghamshire

Buckinghamshire is situated in the South East of England and is bordered by Bedfordshire to the north east, Northamptonshire to the north and Oxfordshire to the west. It is the area in the south of the county with the boundaries of Middlesex (Greater London) to the south east, Berkshire to the south and Hertfordshire to the west that are most significant to our family.

The River Thames forms part of the boundary with Berkshire and the Chiltern Hills are another natural feature often covered with beech woods. The town of High Wycombe is famous for furniture, in particular chair making. The area was quarried for its chalk and clay, used for tile and brick making.

The proximity to London has meant that many of its great houses have political connections such as Chequers, the weekend retreat of the Prime Minister; Hughenden Manor, the residence of Victorian Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli; Cliveden, the residence of the Astor’s and associated with the Profumo Affair.

To the north of the county is Bletchley Park associated with World War II code breaking. The county is also associated with film and television: Pinewood Studios, Denham Studios and the National School of Film and Television was once associated with Beaconsfield.

Our maternal ancestors Eggleton and paternal ancestors Andrews were associated with the south of this county.
